Ridiculously Relevant Professional Development for ART Teachers

I recently participated in the 2015 Art of Ed. Online Winter Conference.  I cannot express how important this professional development is for art educators and I am so thankful that Jessica Balsley and the Art of Education team offers art educators this amazing opportunity!  We were able to view so many great videos from outstanding art teachers from around the country!  The professional development topics covered included: Technology in the Art Room, Weaving Ideas, Clay Tools and Housekeeping Tricks, Creating a Student Gallery, Tracking Student Growth, Art Room Visuals, and they were many, many more!  Any art teachers out there who have not taken advantage of this PD opportunity, visit the Art of Education website at http://www.theartofed.com/  Online conferences are offered in the summer and winter!  Check it out!

  1. I am always rejuvenated when I attend professional development even though it is often difficult finding time to fit it in my schedule. I am glad you are sharing a great professional development opportunity for Art teachers. I will share your information with the art teacher in my school.

    1. It can be really difficult to find the time (and money!) to attend many PD conferences throughout the year. I really do not enjoy missing school and having to write sub plans, so I often will not take PD when we have school. That is one of the reasons I love the Art of Ed. online conferences - they take place on a Saturday, and even if you can't watch on that very day, we have access to the videos and handouts for six months afterward! Great opportunity for Art Educators - Thanks for sharing with your art teacher :-)

  2. That is great! I, too, love to go to conferences. I wish that there was a 3rd grade conference to attend.
It sounds like you are now rejuvinated and ready to finish off another successful school year! I will look forward to new art projects from you :)

What was one really practical idea that you have already implemented in your classroom??

    1. There were so many great ideas! Although I cannot implement them all right away, I am so glad to have the videos and handouts to go back to! One of the ideas that I have already tried is handmade clay tools. These tools can be very costly and difficult to keep from breaking with so many kids using them throughout the year. This session offered ceramic tools that we can make with low-cost materials, and they are easy to make! A win-win!

One other idea that I am working on implementing with my quarter 4 students is reflecting on their work throughout the quarter on their blogs! They create a blog in Technology and I'd love to be able to help students add to and use their blogs in an educational setting! This would be another way for students to share their work with their families and gain feedback from their families, teachers and peers.

  4. I love the feeling that comes from a day/days of professional development, especially if it is meaningful as it seems yours was!!

What kinds of technology ideas they they offer for incorporation in art?

    1. There were several apps that were featured throughout the conference: Drawing Pad, Amaziograph, Fine Art Differences, Art Authority, Foldify and there were many more. Another technology idea that was focused on during the conference was flipping the art classroom - utilizing videos before, during and after class to assist students in their learning of the art concepts. Great information overall!
